RIP John Martyn...

Just read the news of his passing... I've you've any sense or taste you'll already have Inside Out, The Tumbler, Ringside Seat/Live at Leeds, Solid Air, London Conversation, Stormbringer!, or any of his other works in your collection. I'd not followed his output of late, but I've no doubt he aged just as fitfully as his youthful misadventures portended and his slurred muse demanded. A genuinely great musician...

... and we're back!

Home again in Hannover. The cold was a bracing relief at Schönefeld, but now on Dieckbornstrasse it's manifested itself as a marrow-rattling chill. In other words, we're not in Alfama anymore... More updates later, possibly not until tomorrow - I'm slightly rattled from the flight and lack of sleep...

TS

Damn...

Heading off to bed. We're up at 7, off to the airport soon after, and should be in Berlin by 3:15. Probably get back to Hannover four hours later.

I'm so sad I can't stand it...

It was amazing.

Obrigado, Lisboa!

Feliz Aniversário Claudia!

At the toll of the twelfth bell, a vision of perfection... Happy birthday baby!

Selfportrait in Shag...

As socks dried from the rain I took the opportunity to admire my left hoof...

A Crown of Mold...

This extraordinary crest adorned a wall bordering an otherwise nondescript shopping district on the edge of Alfama. I would advise against solipsism in the face of looming decay...

Two New Releases from Karl Schmidt Verlag!

KSV 006 Karl Schmidt - Remediated and Decontextualized Field Recordings Vol. 1 (CDR)

Karl captures the screams of lesser composers as works by Chris Watson, Inverz, Kanalkrank, Koen Holtkamp, Lawrence English and a host of other vanilla latte baristas are trammeled on the road to Nagra Hell. Herr Schmidt wraps the remains in the 28 train and lets the algorithms do the rest...

Recorded, degraded, mixed, mastered and produced by Karl Schmidt in Lisboa, Portugal, January 2009.

01 Untitled (44:15)

Edition of 15. Sleeve by Carla Schultze.

KSV 007 Azul-Cobalto - Patrocínio e Inibição (CDR)

The Lisboa combo document Museu Colecção Berardo's insane current exhibition of the works of radical Portuguese artist Maria Helena Vieira de Silva. Makes Christian Marclay's Footsteps sound like location recordings of Simon Reynolds' sexual flop-sweat by comparison...

(Although we would definitely release those if someone would sent them to us!)

Azul-Cobalto:

Carlo Goytacaz - H2
Tiago Tamoyo - H2, USB mini-mixer
Rodas Zaaboca-Benafaçom - H2

Recorded at and in transit from Museu Colecção Berardo, Lisboa, Portugal, January 2009.

Sincere thanks for your continued support. In February, we return to our home base of Hannover, and subsequent orders will be sent from there. These five weeks in Lisbon have been revelatory...

Museu Colecção Berardo: Vieira de Silva Exhibition (and More)...

This was a revelatory day. I was shamefully ignorant of Maria Helana Vieira de Silva's immense, profoundly moving body of work, and thus I was often transported to private redoubts of joy. She was a titan, a giantess crushing art before her.

Two of the final three photos were taken by Claudia Franke, who especially loved Vieira de Silva's epigrammatic gouaches.

Another proof that despite all disappointments and tragedies, life is fucking wonderful...

Karl Schmidt's Been Busy...

Ola from Lisboa,

We've long since found a pair of CCT offices (Correios de Portugal - the local postal service) within a half-hour's hike of the flat, but getting to a print shop that offers color laser services requires a semi-Herculean labor. (You have to love climbing hills and spending money - the fourteen covers I didn't already have in stock cost €25.50. Ouch!) Still, the most recent group of orders has been filled - discs were burned and watermarked, sleeves printed and folded - and all will be shipped from the Baixa on Monday.

Any orders received on the weekend through the 29th will be shipped from Hannover, as we're headed back to icy Deutschland on the morning of the 30th.

Many thanks for your very kind support.

Cheers,

Tom

Pix from Last Night's Dinner Party...

Yesterday evening we hosted Lisboa's underground elite at the flat in Alfama. I may have vegan'd the throng half to death, but no audible complaints were launched. Instead, we heard hours of scintllating conversation and went through a fucking B-52 bomber bay of vino. The pain, the pleasure, the pain...

Clockwise, from the left: André, Pedro, Afonso, Katarina, Claudia, and Joana. Pix by yours truly...

After the napalm mists had cleared, CP sought the cool night air...

Amo-Te,

Tom
