Denver Dove Right In...

(Amended May 2, 2007.)

Rhinoceropolis... We were in the zone. Believe it or not, we've become a fairly modest bunch, but by solipsistic admission we gave one of our best performances in years. Great audience, wonderful supporting musicians (all of whom should soon be worming their way into your souls - details to follow), and an ungovernable, insanely positive, resolutely non-maudlin vibe yielded hot fucking fecundity. Surroundings matter...

Thanks to those who shot vid, took photos, and otherwise midwifed us through the camel's eye.

As with the other recent posts, please forgive our not including pix right away. I'll sort as many out as I'm able on today's drive to Seattle, and upload them when we hit the next wi-fi hotspot.

Yours,

Tom

Larewnce Welked, and Jesus' Son Smells of Old Crow

(Amended May 2, 2007.)

The Replay gig was, by any reasonable standard of pathology, a strange affair. Analytical drones, surrounded on the adjacent sidewalk by a plague of oafish fratniks, chin-stroked whilst local burlesque bombshell and pitiless purveyor of sarcasm, Lethal Lily, used my thighs to floss her well-apportioned ass. Delightful for us, beyond the pale for those still taken with Godsmack. Rat was off and well into Dolphy terrain before the assembled were able to catch their last collective breath, and although stage acoustics seemed fouled, the audio portion of the video shot by lovely ingenue Lisa revealed surprising clarity and nuance. We thus forgive the beard-scratching...

Not a lot of time to crop, upload and post pics, but we've got tons of 'em, and we'll get to them as soon as we're able. Volunteers have been very, very gracious and helpful - thanks to all of them. Due to their participation we have killer video documention.

More from Denver later,

Tom

(The view from our aluminum perch...)

(Graham and Lily... Don't mess with the lidded and looped, compadre.)

(Ben, Rat, Lily, Graham, and a boldly disdainful TS oscillate for the camera... Methinks the lemon couture made someone grumpy.)

(This Is My Condition, with guest saxophonist Dan Kozak. Theirs was an excellent set.)

(Weezer tribute ensemble Color Music strike a disconcerting pose. "My name is Dan! I'm in a band!")

(Monsieur Kozak, chilling between sets...)

(Graham, forever patching pine...)

Nashville's Burning; Lawrence Beckons...

(Amended May 2, 2007.)

Hello hello hello... I'm writing from a burnished aluminum bench at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence, Kansas. Took us nine hours to drive here from Nashville, and the trip was as absurdly calamitous as one might expect, given our pedigree. This Is My Condition (with guest avant-honker Dan Kozak) began blazing just moments ago, so I ought to bugger off soon. Of course, we've got tons of pix from last night to sort through and post - we'll get to it ASAP.

In brief: Nashville was brilliant... A great set from Taiwan Deth, then bluesy math-rock riffage from Austin's Stnnng, then perverted emo-pop from locals Apollo Up, then us... Mayhem.

Leslie Keffer performed with us. That wild-ass bitch has enormous balls. (And tombstone teeth. And slutpants to spare...) And such a great hostess! Endless cups of Cuban coffee, and many Lindsay Lohan posters to grok... Anyhow, we wrecked the Springwater. Such nice fucking people. Half-strangled shouts to everyone, especially the obviously lost and hopelessly wasted golf shop employee who spilled not one but three beers on the corner of our merch table. Many thanks!

Back to the now - we rev it up in two hours. Updates, a selection of images and (probably) vid to follow.

Love,

Tom

(Our beauty school drop-outs have no bloody future at all...)

(A perfect hostess, and America's hottest punk-noise princess... Can we get a slightly off-key amen?)

(Angela... The transmutation of human desire... Sigh, etc. Our loss is Taiwan Deth's immeasurable gain.)

All Set for the Long Drop...

I arrived at our Atlanta HQ just after midnight; Graham, Bobby and Travis trailed. (Black Meat had performed earlier at the Drunken Unicorn, and stayed late to catch the set of the Norwegian, metal-ish headliners. I pulled into the compound ahead of the Baader-Meinhof Jr. crew.)

We rattled off the usual conversational trifles (Pieter Brueghel, Richard Hamilton, Purient, The Lovin' Spoonful) then settled in to top-level gab.

Travis had to jet; between goodbyes, GM sorted his tour rig. Bobby was knackered (but looked gorgeous nonetheless), and soon begged off for bed upstairs. Graham and I then shaved our heads... All in a day's refusals.

Pix of the sheep shearing to follow.

More from Nashville later today.

TLASILA Pre-Tour Deluge #5: The Underground, Hamilton, Ontario, 3 Sept 06

An extraordinary end to the Canadian tour, and one of the best times with an audience we've ever had... Just fucking sick.

To Live and Shave in L.A. - The Underground, Hamilton, Ontario, September 3, 2006

Combo: AWK, Graham, Chris, Rat, Ben, and me.

TLASILA Pre-Tour Deluge #4: WFMU, Jersey City, NJ, 5 Sept 06

No complaints. Perhaps our between-song dithering was excessive, but ultimately it was a very satisfying session. This is a copy of the broadcast edition of the studio date; the ever-munificent Brian Turner was your on-air host.

To Live and Shave in L.A. - WFMU, Jersey City, NJ, September 5, 2006

Assembled: Don Fleming, Chris Grier, Graham Moore, Rat Bastard, Ben Wolcott, Andrew WK, and TS (c'est moi).

TLASILA Pre-Tour Deluge #3: Friendship Cove, Montréal, 31 Aug 06

This one's a bit of a blur... I think it was the doggedly uneventful hour-long slog at customs. All reserves were sapped; somnambulation seemed the evening's only (in)action option.

To Live and Shave in L.A. - Friendship Cove, Montréal, August 31, 2006

Gruppe: Ben, Chris, AWK, Graham, Rat, and me.

TLASILA Pre-Tour Deluge #2: La Sala Rossa, Montréal, 1 Sept 06

We were invited to perform at La Sala Rossa on the opening night of Montréal's MEG festival. Uncertain what the audience made of us; the reaction seemed both polite and confused. Think I still owe Evan Light material for a jukebox CD3... So bloody forgetful. The promoter gypped us out of several hundred dollars, but that's the way of the world... Amazing city, great people (with obvious exceptions).

TLASILA Pre-Tour Deluge #1: Tonic, NYC, 18 Sept 04

Five days, five previously unreleased recordings. Our smallpox-infused gift to you.

The tour begins in Nashville on the 27th. Kill the kids, sell the wife, burn the husband, bulldoze the mini-mansion, and haul ass to be with us at Sweetwater. Your fucking loss otherwise...

---

To Live and Shave in L.A. - Live, Tonic, New York City, September 18, 2004

Three encores. Audience refused to budge as club drones attempted to clear the hall. Thurston and Kim danced throughout. A damn good night... You missed it? Relive those bits that managed to be recorded...

The crüe: Rat, Ben, Don, Mark, Andrew, Chris (majordomo), and me...

A Respite...

Drove like mad, but still arrived late. Found a room in Port Charlotte, took Evan to dinner. He'd been harried by other family members (on his mum and wife's side of the genetic divide) about Iraq, but he opened up on his own volition. I vowed discretion, but needless to say mordant humor and dismay were meted equally... Back to the Best Western. We watched Obermann, then Evan snoozed while I launched into The Looming Tower. Several months behind the curve on Wright's extraordinary history; I guess I'm as susceptible to Pulitzer hype as the next semi-literate clown... While I flew through the Qutb bio, PBS' Muslim Brotherhood documentary aired. It all made perfect sense... I woke my kid at 3:30 and drove him back to his wife's parents' house. Doubled back, crawled into bed, downed half an Ambien, then made it through another twenty pages of Tower before the veils closed... Some cornball street fest was underway the next afternoon, and Ev and Dawn had plans to attend with in-laws. I bade them farewell and took the long route home up 41. Got back to HQ around midnight... Not nearly enough time with him, but I was very happy to share the few hours we had. His tour of duty has been extended, as have all the others... We might have him home in time for the year-end holidays. Certainly fucking hope so.

TLASILA Flood: Live, Safari Lounge, Providence, RI, September 17, 2004

It was pissing rain, the club was a dismal fuckhole in a dreadful location, and no one seemed to be running the joint, much less cognizant of an impending performance... Hours passed; our mood darkened. Then, many people appeared...

To Live and Shave in L.A. - Live, Safari Lounge, Providence, RI, September 17, 2004

The group:

Rat Bastard, Ben Wolcott, Mark Morgan, Don Fleming, Andrew W.K., Chris Grier (majordomo), und Term Smurf.

(Rat tracks an opening salvo's ballistics...)

(A desperate circus ambiance masked thee stench of d**th...)

(A sweet believer... We'd see more of her kind later.)

(Izzat Leslie Q at center tableaux? A sweetie, to be sure, but this perv was digging the lifeguard's gams and laser eyes.)

(Andrew's infectious smile brightens the world!)

("Row Houses" revs...)

(Had to ditch that fucking hat after the tour... Don and Rat refuse to look at it any longer.)

(If you look closely you can just pick out AWK's leg below Rat... No, over there. That's a Middle Earth Mark Morgan center-right, and the 20-foot, TS-themed carillon tower to his immediate right.)

(As promised... Dig the stereoscopic scan action
à doite!)

(Andrew breaks it down once again...)

(Counting the filthy lucre? Always a pleasure. Don is on the left, CG to his right.)
