(Posted earlier today on our MySpace blog...)

Hello Strangers,

I’m writing from Los Angeles, sick as a tubercular Shitszu, and the fog has yet to lift. Some foul, revenant chest cold or slowly enveloping flu has been creeping up on me since the Tallahassee duo gig of March 20, and on yesterday’s flight from Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta, the stalker sent the rust-encrusted cutlery into my immune system. Ergghhh... My eyes are bloodshot, my hair hurts. Danielle (Collins, the writer-director of A Letter to My President) left earlier for her job as the coordinator for a movie transpo firm (a company that hires fleets of trucks and associated gear to film productions in the L.A. area), and I’m alone in her apartment with cinamon tea, women’s vitamins, packets of soy sauce, and little else. Her pad is very Manhattan single chick-like, with shoes, clothes, books, and in-progress art sketches strewn everywhere. Not much of a view from the living room, but only a block away is the Hollywood everyone on Earth familiar with the reconciliation scene in Borat recognizes. There are markets nearby, bursting with fresh produce, and pharmacies stuffed with over-the-counter remedies, but I’m too dazed to move. What a fucking drag! I need sun badly - my legs are of a listless chalky hue not found in nature, and I was looking forward to a lengthy poolside stretch. I am doomed, as ever.

Last night we stumbled over a kick-ass rooftop biker bar in a warren of warehouses near downtown. Genuinely friendly patrons and staff, an interesting mix of drinking music (mostly old 999 and Jesus and Mary Chain, with a healthy chunk of Lords of Altamont - one of the dudes from the latter ensemble was at the bar; they seem to be the fave group / mascots of the joint); the habituées weren’t so much Glory Stompers as Steve McQueen/vintage bikini pin-up/bike-ephemera fetishists, which most likely accounted for the air of hospitality, the liberal pouring of free Jim Beam shots, and the absence of crushed Pabst tins being shoved into eye sockets.

Dani met local agit-punk hopefuls First Kill at their rehearsal studio (a Triumph Trophy TR6 carburetor toss from the Thursday-only moto conclave), and I coughed conspiratoraily in a corner, re-charging my cell phone while the band worked out a version of SY’s "Youth Against Fascism." (They’re performing it on Sunday in Letter to My Prez.)

After, oblivion. I’m sick. My eyes hurt.

Ready to fucking, er, ROCK.

Best,

TS

Wiki No More...

A friend from London who has added the odd update to the once-sprawling TLASILA Wikipedia entry just sent an email alerting me that the page has been deleted. And not once, but twice in the last seven days!

The last time I gazed at it was March 8, when Patrick Spurlock and I performed at the Four Winds Cafe on the campus of the New School in Sarasota. (Nerds that we are, we arrived 90 minutes before any of the other performers, and while scarfing down avocado wraps we kicked back with the Internet.) I was referencing a print feature from our 2006 tour of Canada for inclusion in the press kit for our forthcoming European trip, and found a link also referencing that article in the Wiki entry. It had grown to nine or ten paragraphs, and had been fairly meticulously documented, although at least a dozen of the references came from online zines, and a handful linked to posts on this blog and content found on our official site. The other references came from newspapers, print mags, and alternative newsweeklies, the sorts of "third-party" sources usually deemed worthy of inclusion.

Alas, a contributor deemed that we were "A7":

A7 (group): Group/band/club/company/etc; doesn't indicate importance/significance.

So there!

Our pal offered to repost the page, but I decided it would be best if we bowed out of the Wiki universe. It's more interesting to know that a valiant, albeit slightly obsessed, culture warrior is patrolling that vast expanse, ready at the drop of a cursor to stamp out all knowledge of our ultimate insignificance!

Look out Europe! We're coming, and we're nothing!

TLASILA: Vedder Vedder Bedwetter (Contiguous Mix)

Hello Everyone,

Here’s the second in our respost series of early TLASILA albums:

To Live and Shave in L.A. - Vedder Vedder Bedwetter (Contiguous Mix)

We’d envisioned VVB as a pitiless, contiguous bombardment. Fifth Column refused to release it without concessions to bourgeois norms (i.e., providing their audience of portly Fetish Night devotees a quasi-comprehensible, oft-demarcated product), and thus the conceit was dashed on the shoals of hubris.

01 Vedder Vedder Bedwetter (71:16)

Recorded at Waterworks, New York; The Studio, Miami; Lounge Ax, Chicago; Zoot’s, Detroit; Local 506, Chapel Hill; The Knitting Factory, New York, and The Green Room, Ypsilanti, December 1994-February 1995 by Greg Tallenfeld, Rat Bastard, and Tom Smith.

Rat Bastard - bass
Tom Smith - voice, edits, tape manipulation
Ben Wolcott - oscillator and treatments

Bill Orcutt - guitar
Don Fleming - guitar and backing vocals
Ned Hayden - alto sax
Jared Louche (née Hendrickson) - guitar and backing vocals
Nandor Nevai - trombone
Weasel Walter - tenor sax

Music TLASILA / Lyrics TS.

Originally released as Fifth Column CD 9868-63189 in 1995, with the following track sequence:

01 5 Seconds Off Your Ass
02 Grams, Paths
03 Pig Off, Ass Full
04 Bucks, Rears and Throws the Rider
05 Dungstar Supervivisect!
06 Throws Cunt a Tear
07 O. Ruddock d. H.S. Mauberly
08 Long-Drawn and Staccato "Lousy Dime"
09 Shits Upon the Debris and Burns
10 Handballed "Viet"-Clasp
11 The The, Which Radiance Overdrenched
12 In Such Wise She Cannot Stir
13 Miff Mole, Witch-Leery Scot
14 Shut the Second She Clawed
15 Rug Trilogy: Christus
16 Like the Two-Part Nod
17 Nigh to the HM Threshold
18 M. Polk, Prop.
19 Cobwebs with "Trap" Primrose
20 Glas Employed an Urn
21 Schwann Death in June Reference
22 "Good Bait" Made Butt of Insult
23 The Sink Mentioned in the Scriptures
24 Rubberist, Unwept
25 The The Perms
26 And Hammer, the Crown of Thorns
27 From Gloss "Polytope" Flexi
28 "A," the Swinging She-River
29 Blind Hole Without a Piss-Eye
30 Ulalume / Fram Decal Split
31 Brother Falling, Twat from Fool
32 Left Bro. at Doors
33 T.C.B. Dropskirt
34 Die, One and Five

Sleeve design by Syd Garon, unfortunately mangled by Fifth Column’s staff buffoon. Naturally, the physical elements of the original artwork -- including the found Polaroid around which the album's "M. Polk" narrative was spun, and a postcard from a Christian gun shop (!) in Alabama sent to me by Boat Of/Method Actors/Beauty Contest stalwart David Gamble -- were never recovered. (Only the Photoshop files exist.) I’ve grown to accept the FCR version, but the intended sleeve was infinitely more arresting. I've written to Sydney about unearthing hi-res images of the VVB artwork; if he's successful in his expedition, I'll post the original art here, and the visual reorientation can begin.

To commemorate WFMU's selection of our September 5, 2006 studio session as part of their permanent Free Music Archive, I've thrown together a mashup EP of both TLASILA's '06 and 2007 visits to their august domain. Many thanks to Brian Turner and Jason Sigal, 'FMU's Licensing Director, for thinking of us...

Our 2006 session featured Ben Wolcott, Rat Bastard, Andrew W.K., Chris Grier, Don Fleming, Graham Moore, and me. The 2007 session was performed by Chris, Rat, Graham, me, Patrick Spurlock, former Peach of Immortality roustabout Mark Shellhaas, and erstwhile Ill Humor succubus Kelly Jamison. Sleep Well,

Isia Moriendo Renascor...

Hello Again,

My uncle's funeral was yesterday...

I didn't much feel like writing during the week. Mainly I hung out with my extended family - the cousins, nieces and nephews I seldom have the opportunity to visit - and enjoyed the shared solace of fellowship. These recent days have been suffused with melancholy, but also underscored with resounding, joyous chords writ in whorls of dazzling filigree...

To a life well led, sir.
