To Hell with "Autobahn" - I've been invited to teach a class inside an actual Kraftwerk tomorrow afternoon, and you can bet your sweet pocket calculator that my digital recorder will be along to capture every ear-piercing shriek and subsonic thrumm. Shifting into overdrive...

Hi Again,

Received the masters for disc two of Kevin Drumm's forthcoming KSV debut. It's going to blow everyone's hosiery away, or, fuck it, just erase the idea of socks and thigh-highs from human consciousness...

Rope Cosmetology will tour Europe sometime between March-April 2011. Hoping we can do at least three weeks of performances. We'll keep you posted.

Kevin and I will embark on a ten-day duo tour of Europe in May 2011. Look the fuck out.

Off to bed. More Show Fruit when I feel like it!

Love,

TS

TLASILA: Show Fruit (Série B) 19...

Immense, dark and unbelievably submerged slab of an aptly titled distant marimba tinkle...

TLASILA - Show Fruit (Série B) 19: Midyim

Assembled from extracts of the following recordings from the official To Live and Shave in L.A. archive:

POI - Live, Churchill's, Miami (20 Sept 93) (the final performance under the placeholder moniker), and TLASILA - Live, Churchill's, Miami (1 Oct 93) (the first live performance under the To Live and Shave in L.A. name).

Setlist, 20 Sept 93:

01 Pictures at an Exhibition
02 Long Georgette Jacket
03 Piss, My Heart
04 Unobscured Miss
05 Foul Thérèse
06 Weakness Spits

Setlist, 1 Oct 93:

01 Throbbing Gristle at the Berlin Wall
02 LEF-Mux 'Theme' Plasti-Cast
03 Hackworth
04 Strength into My Blows
05 Elevated Host
06 The Worst of the Faecal Orders
07 Thirty-Six Fun
08 As One Would Possess a Potted Plant
09 Smoke My Habit
10 I Shall Eat Peyote
11 Christian Coalition

As was my want between 1992 and 1993 while recording 30-mm, I would write a new set every other week, and interlace promising compositions within the newer ones when the mood struck. All of the songs from the September 20th set made it onto männercreme, and the first four from the October 1st performance made the cut as well. "Elevated Host" almost did, but was dropped at the last minute. We assayed "Thirty-Six Fun," "Peyote," and "Christian Coalition" many times, but they never came together to my satisfaction. From the time of the first TLASILA demos in May 1990 to the moment I made the name change (from POI) permanent in October 1993 (not counting the demos, edit/performance templates and sample collections created using the TLASILA moniker during that time), my rasion d'etre was wholly absolute. 30-mm was the result of nearly three continuous years of research and development. Below, you are invited to trace the seams of the crux...

Pix from Solo Vocal #1...

Hi Again,

My first solo vocal performance was last Thursday at the Oberdeck here in Hannover. Cool-ass audience, intense and gratifying response. An excellent precursor to the winter tour of Europa...

Ten images from the performance may be found below. I'll add pix taken by other photographers as they come in. There was documentation galore...

--

(Before the performance, chilling with the attendees... Photo by Claudia Franke.)

(The allowed instrumentation: an mp3 player (for the lecture segment), and two sheets of paper (my text). The amp was switched off after the presentation ended... Photo by Karl Schmidt.)

(The Oberdeck only really holds about 25 people with comfort, although I've seen 40 squeezed in there before. Almost 20 came for the solo performance, and a few more wandered in after it was over. In other words, perfect. [I was whispering for most of the performance.] Photo by KS.)

(The left side of the room, before the performance. Those three front bar stools were later occupied, or at least I think so... Photo by Karl.)

(Just before blast-off... Photo by KS.)

(The presentation begins... Image from Claudia Franke's video.)

(Part One ended with an injunction and a plethora of dire warnings... Frame grab from the CP's video.)

(Solo vocal. No amplification, microphones, monitors, or gear of any kind. [I was wearing very nice socks, if that's any consolation to received conceptions of raw energy...])

(Afterwards, two hours of animated conversation ensued. Ideas had been seeded...)

(One down, and fuck knows how many to go... Photo by Claudia Franke.)

--

Look for the Karl Schmidt Verlag album (KSV 100) soon. There'll also be a solo 7" later in the year featuring material performed at the Oberdeck show, as well as a related track on the forthcoming MonotypeRec compilation disc. As for the winter tour, I'll pass along date info as it becomes available.

Cheers,

TS

The 2000th Post...

Hello All,

Not that I've been counting, but this seems to be some sort of landmark: the 2000th post. I began the blog shakily (publishing far too few entries) in late 2004, and didn't really get serious until mid-2005. Since then, however, TLASILA Blog has been a continuous fixture on the outer fringes, not satisfying any particular traditional niche, but endeavoring rather to provide a smudged window into the processes that have shaped (and continue to chip away at) this glowering, two-decade-old monolith. (In other words, it's always been about ideas.)

A small reward for your interest and patience:

Final day. Already checked out, ready for a long walk and another beach trip before flying back to rainy Hannover. It´s been splendid. No other words needed...

Re last night: saw the first and second acts of the new Salzburg production of Alban Berg´s "Lulu," with Patricia Petibon in the lead. Holy fucking shit... Opera is the only truly EXTREME form.

(Re-posted and expanded from the original Facebook post. Sorry - we´ve little time here.)

More swimming in secluded alcoves, a second, two-hour encounter with dolphins and whales, a fifth or sixth extended remix of reclining indolently in the sun, and loving all of it. This was our last full day in Tenerife. Relaxed (truthfully) at last... By early Monday morning, back to work in Deutschland - head first into the slipstream.

Next Thursday, TS solo vocal at the Oberdeck.

Hello,

Enjoyed one of the best days of my life yesterday, swimming in the shadow of the immense megaliths collectively known as "Los Gigantes" - a five kilometer stretch of volcanic massifs topping out at 900 meters, each spreading out into the Atlantic in astounding convultions of geometry. At the Masca massif, our catamaran anchored and we were given 15 minutes to dive into the deep, hypnotic blue. As predicted
yesterday, being dwarfed by the immensity of these aggressively echt cliffs, and simultaneously engulfed in such profound beauty, was utterly exilarating...

Tenerife #4

Hello Again,

In the lobby - sweltering, but that´s an anomaly. Our hotel is on the swank side, with an appalling carbon footprint. Mark Stewart would doubtless pen a screed.

Anyhow, off in a few to record in a new, favored location. The CP and I heard sounds there yesterday that neither of us had heard before in nature. A peculiar tidal clattering...

The seagulls´calls are also disorienting, possessing a distinctly simian tonality at odds with familiar behavioral assumptions. Shame that they´re rather shy about sharing their howls with us.

More Later,

TS

Tenerife #3

(Re-posted and amended from the original Facebook entry. Sorry - short of time!)

Explored another corner of the island yesterday. We hit the motherlode - a long strip of black volcanic sand, populated primarily by locals. Extraordinary vistas along the way, and amazing moments which lurched and stumbled into our field of view, including two women, probably a mother (middle-aged, topless) and daughter (with a profile resembling Brooke Shields´wraith-like Blue Lagoon frame), hauling the rotting hulk of a PC monitor from the surf. As they artfully positioned it ato...p a rock formation, the CP and I were catapulted into a plane of infinite bliss...

Tenerife #1

Almost relaxed... Arrived late, around 20:00, Tenerife time, due to flugzeug maintenance dithering in Hannover. No probs, regardless. The Tooth Fairy was the in-flight film. Brutal. (Omens, as ever, are inauspicious.) At the bus rank, a rotund local intoned "Left, left, left right left!" to mock the oncoming German horde... Trudged into the hotel, and were quickly ensconsed into the stateroom-sized bar to shake off the flight and await our turn at reception. Immediately, a recording opportunity - two competing music sources, demanding attention. While a woeful, yet dutifully valiant trio were wafting pop covers on the patio, a superbly dyspeptic DJ spat out 50s rock standards at two-to-three times the intended speed for a gaggle of kids sequestered within a sunken dance floor. KSV titanium. Thankfully, this spectacle is scheduled to repeat itself throughout our stay...

Tenerife Sud is spectacular, as expected. The cocktails are large, their properties both labyrinthine and blunt. Intoxication is the first step towards calm.

Today, water and sun. We pick up the pace tomorrow.
