Another Farewell...

Requiescat in pace: Adrienne Rich.

A fiery poet, contentious, possessed, brilliant, powerful. I sometimes found her exasperating, which is male-sprecht for "she pushed the buttons that most needed to be pushed." I name-checked her in "Mizrahi Speculum," a song from To Live and Shave in L.A.'s second album, "Helen Butte" vs. Masonna Pussy Badsmell," and quoted her signature work, Diving Into the Wreck, in its chorus. With posthumous apologies - and great thanks - to a true titan of the arts...

The New York Times' obituary can be found here.

What's an Otter to Do, Save Dam?

Hello Fellow Freaks,

Fresh from the dustbins of the No, Honestly, I Really Can't Be Bothered Department, via my occasional touring/recording partner-in-thought-crime Kevin Drumm: Russell Haswell's Best of 2011 list, submitted to and rejected by the gloomy fundamentalists at The Wire. KD wrote the following when he sent Russell's choices: "no doubt they saw my name and KSV and decided to pull it!" What can one do but nod, pull the pop-top on a can of Jack D & Coke, ignore all the hopelessly insipid bullshit one knows better than to fret over, and forge ahead with even greater ferocity? (Momentary vanity note: for what it's worth to you, four of the artists on RH's Top 15 chart had albums released last year on Karl Schmidt Verlag, and we're EXTREMELY private. No promo copies for any mag, ever, least of all for duh Dire...)

Thought you'd want to see it for yourselves...

Best Wishes,

TS

RIP Peter Bergman...

Rest in peace Peter Bergman... Who? One of the four founders of surrealist comedy troupe The Firesign Theatre, and, in his prime, a withering wit, master parodist, audio vérité titan, and indefatigable scourge of the banal. Their thousands of hours of radio productions and perhaps now dated but nonetheless staggering albums (the first five or six especially) are an ineradicable testament of greatness. Sure, the edge disappeared by the mid-80s, but it matters not. Anyone who dips into the Firesign's work with avidity will understand. Whenever I hear the "chinchilla" bit from the 1972 album Dear Friends I still fall about laughing.

(An angular take on the sleeve of Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman's TV or Not TV album from 1973.)

Times obit here.

Cheers, Herr Bergman!

The New Lost City Velvet Monkeys...

Hello All,

Don Fleming, my oldest pal and erstwhile Boat Of/Peach of Immortality/To Live and Shave in L.A. co-conspirator, was a guest on yesterday's Colbert Report program. Swank! Plucky unknowns Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello joined Don for a few songs and a discussion of the life and work of Alan Lomax...

Labor Relations Summary, Week 10...

Guten Tag,

The response to this new release salvo has been gratifyingly positive. Again, we're suddenly very busy. Prepping, editing, mastering, burning - the bloody factory floor fairly shrieks its hums. So, note that the first orders will go out on March 16th.

Bonus godliness: we're including a remastered version of the video of To Live and Shave in L.A.'s May 2008 Instants Chavirés performance with each copy of La réprimande (KSV 200). The audio is somewhat less than perfect, but Sickboy, Balazs, Gaybomb, the surprise nude dancer, and yours ever so truly are relatively in focus. The 666 brigade was well-fêted that eve and its audience wet their stylishly oversized knickers...

Why? Why not? We want to thank you, and so we shall.

Best,

Karl und Tom

Ballistics Report...

Freunde,

Very pleased with the recent group of KSV releases. They're an accident investigator's dream assignment, collapsed dining cars and turbines atop scattered carloads of 18-meter PVC quills. More than one pseudonym has been employed. Remember why Karl Schmidt Verlag exists, and enjoy the pieces you're able to enjoy. Everything is ephemeral, save perhaps Limahl jumble sale maxi-singles. Those fuckers are forever...

Launching a new bi-monthly KSV mag soon. It'll be called Your Violence. Critical analysis, original and abraded photography, etc. Probably no more than twenty-four pages per issue, minimal made-to-order runs, etc.

Re the aforementioned releases: expanded info and particulars soon.

Apologies to those of you who experienced late shipments last year, and to the unfortunate few whose orders disappeared completely. The majority of those errors have long been rectified, but three particularly faithful and unfailingly helpful friends of KSV are still waiting for pieces of orders that vanished into the transatlantic postal maw. I intend on making these top-ranking aesthetes extremely happy, and soon. (Why the wait? I'm reformatting the layout on a couple of books, and re-designing the sleeves that sheathed the unfettered entropy of our most ambitious release.) The moral? Transparency is paramount. I want everyone to know that glitches occasionally occur. We could sometimes do with a bit of soulless efficiency...

--

There's a new Don Fleming Tom Smith album in the works. It'll be our first release together since the 1991 Gin Blossoms EP. KSV will get the physical, and DF's Instant Mayhem will do the virtual...

Neural Misfire...

Re KSV postage: we're holding 2012 prices at the 2010 rate, so Eurozone commies can expect to pay €8.49 for single discs and €11 for both double-disc recordings and single-disc DVD editions. Everyone else pays €11 and €14 respectively, due to shipping costs and the packaging rigmarole. If you've already sent yr hard-won geld prior to this alert, and you live outside of the EU, and you failed to adjust the rate owing to my forgetfulness, no sweat. I'll pick up the rest. Otherwise, normal rates apply.

Best, as ever,

Tom

Re: POI "Succumbs"...

Hello All,

Below, please find a sheet of thumbnails for the reissued Peach of Immortality video compilation Succumbs (Restored). Fellow Maoist and multi-hyphenate Fred Ware III put it together with me after hours at the production studio of Valdosta State College (now University, and my alma mater) way back in '91. The U-Matic master, infinitely sharper than the transferred VHS-SP copy transferred to digital (courtesy of KSV artiste and late period TLASILA member Patrick Spurlock), still exists, but only Satan knows where the antiquated playback units for that forlorn format may be. The only first-generation dupe extant, to my knowledge, is the one currently resting at KSV HQ...

That's what it more or less looks like.

(My Doris Wishman obsession was already on display, a full year before I actually met the late director and drew her into my/our unholy cabal...)

Und schließlich! Fifteen New Releases on Karl Schmidt Verlag!

Hello Again,

The first dozen of these were initially scheduled to launch in late December, but we were having too much fun on holiday - work was shunted to remote redoubts. I decided to take a break between January and February as well, owing to various backlogs and production snafus. Transparency alert: I'm not quite out of the Black Forest just yet, but my compass seems to be slightly more reliable than it was a year ago...

New Links: Peach of Immortality - "Jehovah" My Black Ass - REM Is Air Supply!

Hello Droogs,

The second POI album received an even icier reception in the States than the first.

We wanted REM to sound like constricted Gordian clots of unstable pirate broadcast signals. All we listened to at the time was David Hykes, Diamanda Galás, Bela Bartók, Crime + City Solution, György Ligeti, and Judas Priest. We did a fuckload of acid. It showed.

Peach of Immortality recorded another fifteen (!) albums between, before, and amid Jehovah/REM and 1989's Taxi zum Shoah. We couldn't inveigle anyone to release any of them them, and we slowly faded from view.

Soldiering on, we performed a poorly attended farewell gig at Atlanta's Klaang! studio space in early 1991, had a few drinks afterward to celebrate the long, mad debacle, and quietly parted company.

I'd already stumbled over Ron Jeremy's porn parody of William Friedkin's To Live and Die in L.A. (in 1988, at Valdosta, Georgia's still-extant, long-bowdlerized Video Warehouse), and by May 1990 had filled four Maxwell C-60s with TLASILA demo sketches.

The future roared toward us...

(Above, a dreadful photo of the foldout wraparound poster. Just so you know, that's
Mike Green from Boat Of pictured therein. He wasn't in POI.* The top liner notes were stolen word-for-word from the second Chicago album. The bottom "thank you" bullshit was purloined from a now-forgotten metal album. And there you are - instant doom.)

*(Mike eventually performed with POI on two occasions; in 1989 in Athens, GA, and in 1991 in Atlanta.)

(Brilliant gay porn clip art and LED font sleeve design for the 1996 reissue by Syd Garon, a longtime friend of TLASILA, an erstwhile member of the monumentally cool Frosty, and an award-winning, busy-ass filmmaker. The folks at Fused Coil nearly shat themselves. Not happy at all. But, to their credit, they allowed us to commit suicide.)

No explanations. We were loved/acknowledged/tolerated by few, but time seems to have been on our side. Or, at least time finally fucking passed out...

Re KSV: Damn, So Little Time...

Sorry everyone, but the flash will have to wait until later today (Friday). I was too slammed with work and meetings yesterday to get everything hoisted to the webs.

Forgive, bitte.

Soon,

Merkwürdig Riechen: First Promo Pose...

Hi Again,

First promo photo of Merkwürdig Riechen*.

(*"A strange kind of smell.")

Left, yours unfailingly. Right, Luke Calzonetti (founding/ex-member of Child Abuse). We'll soon add a third...

The moral:

For every successful project we don't kill, we get weaker. The joy lies in beginning, and slipping unobtrusively into dark matter. Rope Cosmetology follows this pattern, and with perseverance, so will Merkwürdig R.
