KDTS Tour: Day #7

The KDTS tour wrapped up in Köln with a set that veered into hitherto/heretofore unexplored realms of constriction and concision. My voice was a mere attenuated rasp, and Kevin's electronics were coughing and shuddering all the while, but the emotional frissons went deeper, and some audience members flipped out completely. A couple up front bailed early, visibly angered. I immediately leapt onto their chairs, one knee on each seat, and sang a passage to the row behind. A third person complained to a friend via mobile after the gig about wanting to "hear some noise, but Drumm brought this crazy Tom Waits guy instead!" I loved that complaint - it proved our thesis. The known, so comforting, was entirely disrupted. (And it pointed to the condition of my raw, contorted vocal cords.) And, in the process, it led to the creation of more than a few shimmering pools of beauty. We're going to continue the collaboration, so all in all, mission accomplished!

RIP Gil-Scott Heron...

Sigh...

Obit here.

KDTS Tour: Day #5

Exhilarating gig last night at Les Instants Chavirés in Montreuil (one of Paris' coolest and most bustling neighborhoods). A fairly naff free-jazz trio were on the bill too, and the atmosphere was thus somewhat muted, but by mid-set reserve was dissolved. My voice was rather frayed around the edges, but Kevin wailed throughout - his electronics shrieked and transmuted into '68 rioter's stones. Julie Huntington (Galen, The Hercules, Sucking Coeds) was there! Andy Bolus created an edition of one! (I bought a Clash t-shirt from H&M for Andy to customize and he detourned the fucker with aplomb.) We got drunk! And we recognized the third free-jazz circle of Hell. Great night. Merci, Paris!

KDTS Tour: Day #3 Pt. 2...

Insane gig at Cave12 in Geneva. Must have been the Wolf Eyes album the DJ played before we began - we were psyched to unleash. Did Jedward's "Lipstick" as an encore, and slayed. Tomorrow, Saint-Etienne. Now, three glasses of Oban...

KDTS Tour: Day #3

Writing from a cafe in Basel. Scheming to arrange a recording session between Arvo Pärt and Anna Rossinelli, the Swiss entrant who finished last in the recent Eurovision competition. Such is tour delirium. Tonight, Cave 12 in Geneva. First two gigs, as described by Kevin Drumm (who is sitting to my right): "invigorating, challenging." As for me, not enough single malt scotch backstage, but otherwise, alles ist gut!

Hello Everyone,

RIP Leonard Kastle...

Leonard Kastle, the director of the brilliant, almost implacably bleak 1970 film The Honeymoon Killers, has died...

The Criterion Collection's synopsis:

"Martha Beck (Shirley Stoler) is sullen, overweight and heartbreakingly alone. Desperate for affection, she joins Aunt Carrie’s Friendship Club and strikes up a correspondence with Ray Fernandez (Tony Lo Bianco), a suave, charismatic smooth talker who could be the man of her dreams—or a wicked con artist bound for trouble. Based on a true story and filmed in documentary-style black and white, The Honeymoon Killers is a stark portrayal of the desperate lengths to which a lonely heart will go to find true love, from brutally immoral killings to a passion that transcends all bounds."

Rest well, sir...

R.I.P. Harald Bockisch...

Our friend Harald Bockisch, a member of Hannover's Silke Arp Bricht / Oberdeck collective, was intensely reflective, non-effusive to a fault. Although he made a virtue of restraint, I'd seen him dancing, dreamily (and restively) imbibing, and sitting either with stoic remove or placid delight through scores of concerts and salon performances. He died a few days ago of pneumonia.

Life and death are ever capricious.

We are all shocked and saddened by his sudden passing...

(Harald Bockisch. Photo by Malte.)

Thanks for your admirable reserve, and greater thanks still for your friendship.

Requiescat in pace...

¡Hola!

Still several fathoms below the norm after falling prey to an awful cold last weekend. A warm spell was chased away by a bitterly cold three-day convulsion, and tolerances were exceeded. Coughing the last of the congestion from my guts, but I fear I may not fully recover before Tuesday. (Just feels that way.) Nasty bugger, this one.
