Liberace Thugs in das Haus...

What passes for cool is ultimately a matter of subjective aesthetics, but this afternoon I saw something that usurped the very notion of cool, beheaded it and videoed the heinous act with cool's own handy*, then ate the balls of Brother Cool while sewing the uterus of Sister Cool into a pouch for an official Daughtry Oval Crest Belt Buckle. What I witnessed was massively other, the aftermath of an explosion of wanton critical misjudgment. (In other words, possibly mega-cool?)

This clown got on to the Number 9 tram wearing a glitter-encrusted, faux-NBA logo shirt (with the slogan "National Pussy Association" spelled out in slivers of serif fiagree), and perhaps the most unspeakably (un)cool jeans in the annals of sartorial dichotomy.

The CP reckons he was Russian, and although I have no reason to question her assumption, I would bet the rhinestone farm that he was a German kid from the next neighboorhood over...

Ultimately, this gives me hope for a future populated by half-sentient distant cousins unconcerned with either context or even basic meaning.

Sonic Youth always had it wrong - confusion isn't sex. Far from it.

It's an unmemorable meander through the shoelace isle...

KSV Updated Update!

Hi Again,

It's been a mad work week, and I've still one day to go. Exhaustion has become my fuel, and the darker circles around the sunken sockets of my once-sparkling orbs provide a beacon for wraiths and nightgaunts. I feel like a million Euros (that have been soaked in caustic lye)...

On to business: each of our previously issued releases is now SOLD OUT. We have a few copies of some of the more recent titles reserved for our distributor, Tochnit Aleph, but apart from those, everything is gone.

Many thanks to our regulars and occasional passersby for your very kind support.

Coming August 1: the debut album by Female Reggae Showcase (KSV 017), and (this is new, by the way), on August 5, the debut platter by Maude (KSV 036).

Thanks as always for your illuminating emails. The instant feedback is always appreciated!

Yours Faithfully,

On the 16th I hastily assembled a remix of Terminal 11's new Cock Rock Disco album, Kaleidoscope Eyes. Owing to the late hour of Jason Forrest's announcement of the release, I was unable to meet my goal of completing a top-to-bottom remix in less than two hours. (Damn!) I begged forbearance, as I managed to rework only six of the album's nine tracks... Ten days have passed since my original post; I've finally found the time to defame the final trio of compositions.

My version of the album is credited to "T11," and has been retitled Cloaked Poise.

KSV Update...

Good Morning Lovelies,

Off to work in a few minutes, so while I'm murdering the fragile moments left before I bolt for the tram, I may as well give you the blood-flecked lowdown on the next raft of releases:

Careening toward you on August 1st, the long-delayed and much dithered-over Female Reggae Showcase album (Kid Traumgekrönt/U-Hölderlin Super-Clash!) will have mud all over its corsets, but will nonetheless be available. On August 15, you can finally get your mitts on the 2xCD Rope Cosmetology studio collection, Spezial: Gedankengefüge (Compound Thought). No need for hype on this one - those in the know know. Verstehen Sie? August 23 finds Katja Frigate's Coldplay Nancarrow Burzum Hines assemblage at last ready for public aring, and September 1 will mark the escape of our slightly delayed 25th disc (especially as we're already up to number 35!), the all-encompassing, all-knowing, all-deflecting mega-mix compilation Karl Schmidt Verlag: Was du nicht wissen wolltest? Also on this date, the 3xCD TLASILA set of recycled, re-positioned "hybrids," Die Fehde des Gemischs. We suggest you eat all your meds at once for that one...

As if all this weren't burden enough, on September 15 we'll begin our first, tentative steps into actual Verlag-ness with the publication of a new book of fellow traveler Tom Smith's photographs, and, on October 1, the release of Unpunished, an illustrated volume of TS's 2000-2001 reviews for the late, oh-so-great Bananafish.

Too pro for you? Well, many were reeling, swooning, coughing up clumps of bilious humors, nay, nearly dropping dead under the intense pace of releases. Engines have thus been reversed, and the gargantuan ship of state that is KSV GmbH will be steaming along - at least for the next few months - at a more regal clip.

SOLD OUT: Feinkost Lampe: 26. Februar (KSV 018); Tom Smith & Blue Sabbath Black Fiji - Ich werde nicht nackt sein (KSV 022); Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson & Tom Smith - Todesröcheln (KSV 026); Rope Cosmetology - Hinterzimmer-Apotheke (leibt) illegal Meztgerei (KSV 027); Silke Arp Bricht: 3. Juni (KSV 029); and Tom Smith - Hintergrundmusik (KSV 032). Many, many thanks.

ALMOST GONE: Three Resurrected Drunkards - Begriffsschrift (KSV 019) and Twenty Years of Sudden Infant: One Participant's Perspective (KSV 023). Get 'em while you can.

Coming later in 2009: 50 Karl Schmidt Fans Can't Have Jobs!?, a box containing all previously-issued KSV recordings and publications, two DVDs, three bonus CDs, and more, housed in a container ill-suited for stovepipe hat storage. A limited edition of ten units, and as each one will take a week or so to make, beware: the love will surely ooze forth...

Hope everyone is well.

New Release on KSV!

I've been trying to slow down the pace of research and development here at KSV HQ, but despite all efforts, this newest model fairly raced from the lab. Covers are printed, discs are burned. Orders received through 17:30 today (5:30 PM) will be mailed immediately. (Deutsche Post is just up the street from our flat.)

KSV 035 Karl Schmidt - Remediated and Decontextualized Field Recordings Vol. 2

"The mundane argue. Karl Schmidt enables fibrous awareness. That the eighteen tortured operate in semi-fictitious, blissful impossibility suggests their feats and visions influenced ritual Deleuzian states of pre-subjective alterity. Formative peyote and cliff genesis mentors broad autonomy. Psychoactive flights of radical felt operations, prior to the God sorcerer, included the line "imposed often." The nonhuman forms a near signification of therapeutic actions imperceptible to the light-point drugs which demand the pillaging which produced Artaud’s ingestion. Botanical drugs are blissful torturers." - J. Brentano, Parabol

Head Down, No-Nonsense Commuting...

One of the best things about living in Germany is that it's a car-optional society. There's no need to have wheels at all, ever, unless you really, really want them. I'm extraordinarily grateful that my two vehicles are gathering dust back in Georgia...

At least three times each week I ride my bike to a tram stop, lock it up, drop a few coins into the ticket machine on the U-Bahn platform, and take a leisurely (but sometimes rather jarring) trip to the suburb of Mülenberg, where I teach English classes to a plethora of energy company employees.

Below, a document of one such journey, recorded just a few hours ago. Yeah, a few of my fellow passengers shoot me dirty looks for filming the air around them. Such are my travails...

Tending to the Flock...

I've been neglecting some of the related sites. Time, as always, is at a premium. ("Time management," a loathsome idea if there ever was one, isn't exactly my forte.) To address these crimes, I went into overdrive and added a blog update to the moldering Miss High Heel profile, uploaded three short videos, over 100 photos, and changed the layout of the Rope Cosmetology page (its Blogger counterpart is still woefully undernourished - forgive), responded to long-standing friend requests at the TLASILA MySpace page (and there's still a lot of work to be done there, apologies in advance, etc.), added all the new and recently issued albums (and accompanying sound files) to the Karl Schmidt Verlag site (yeah, its Blogger doppelganger is also hurting - I'll get around to it, promise), even Twittered a few times yesterday, and responded to some follower tweets.

And one of these millennia I'll complete the latest revamp of the TLASILA web portal. Oy...

Happy Clattering,

I must apologize for issuing so many goddamned albums through KSV, but when my muse wraps her thighs around my skull I find it almost impossible to resist the urge to gnaw, bite, and howl. There's still more on the way, of course - Karl's second volume of Remediated and Decontextualized Field Recordings (KSV 035) is nearly complete, and the five or six titles previously announced (and not yet unleashed) are in various stages of nascence.

(Karl Schmidt - Remediated and Decontectualized Field Recordings Vol. 2; coming soon!)

If you haven't plunked down your hard-earned currency for the Three Resurrected Drunkards album, do so quickly - they're nearly gone. The TS/Black Fiji collection is SOLD OUT. See previous entries for details...

One Straggler, One Lobster-Red Curb Crawler...

(Amended July 6, 2009.)

Guten Tag,

New today from Karl Schmidt Verlag, another instant release, as per credo, ethos, and directive:

KSV 034 Schützenausmarsch: 5. Juli, Hannover

Recorded by Karl, featuring occasional (mostly muted) commentary from your hosts TS & CF, this album features the sounds of Hannover's bizarre Schützenausmarsch, a procession of marching bands comprised of members from Lower Saxony's many gun clubs. By tradition, each club has been up all night drinking (celebrating the conclusion of Schützenfest), and while Sousa enthusiasts are likely to find fault with the parade and its participants, casual ethnographers with a taste for the outré (and just plain fugged-up) will reach a different set of conclusions.

01 Composite (31:18)
02 Version (32:20)
03 Coda (1:04)

Mixed and produced by TS for KSV, July 5, 2009.

Edition of 10.

KSV 019 Three Resurrected Drunkards - Begriffsschrift

This collection has been on the greasy, too infrequently lit back burner for months. The first of Begriffsschrift's two discs details the three weeks of rehearsals that preceded the duo's sophomore performance (March 6, 2009, at Hannover's Silke Arp Bricht); the second documents the final dress rehearsal recordings made at Silke on the afternoon of the performance.

It kills.

101 Rehearsals (February 17-March 1, 2009) (78:07)
201 Dress Rehearsal (March 3, 2009) (59:29)

Composed and performed by Three Resurrected Drunkards:

Pit Noack - prepared cassettes, tape machines, speaker array
Tom Smith - voice

Recorded live by Karl on the H2 at Silke Arp Bricht, Hannover.
Mixed and produced by TS May-June 2009 at Western Blot, Hannover.

Edition of 25.

KSV 034 is € 8.49 within the EU, €10 outside the EU.

KSV 019 (a double disc album) is
€ 10.49 within the EU, €12 outside the EU.

Postage paid. Add € 1 for each additional album.

Aufstieg in Fahrtrichtung verkehrt!

Hello Everyone,

I've been working quite a lot of late, traveling throughout Lower Saxony to various corporate strongholds where I parsimoniously impart the gnostic secrets of English. Apologies for falling behind in posts these last two weeks - I've been filling in the gaps whenever I have a spare moment.

Re KSV: still working out the kinks of the Female Reggae Showcase album. Chris Grier's parts are superb, as might be expected, but I'm being overly exact with the surrounding sonic elements. Just can't help myself... As for the long-delayed Three Resurrected Drunks opus, it's all done, save for a final round of dithering. Sometime next week?

In the meantime, I've completed two "instant" releases, both recorded on Saturday, the 27th of June. The first of these details the music I composed for a dinner party that began the evening, and the second documents a truly epic DJ party at that went down at favored hangout Silke Arp Bricht. Turntables were set up all over the club, and the inspired local jocks pulled out gem after coruscating gem. The howls of delight you'll hear were all too real...

I would have posted these new collections earlier in the week, but I reckoned it would be best to give everyone a respite from Karl's punishing regimen.

Here are the new releases:

KSV 032 Tom Smith - Hintergrundmusik

Recorded June 27, 2009. Mixed June 29-July 2, 2009 by TS at KSV HQ, Hannover. Initial playback (rough version), June 27.

01 Hintergrundmusik (68:45)

Composed and produced by TS.

Edition of 10.

KSV 033 27. Juni: Strict Sevens (A Dogma Diary) (2xCD)

Recorded by Karl throughout the evening of June 27, 2009, at Silke Arp Bricht, Hannover, on the occasion of their "Strictly 7" Vinyl Only" party. One of the best, least despairing, most engaging nights out I've enjoyed in ages...

DJs: Celler Loch, Major Marks, Stan das unausstehliche Ehepaar, David 7Lynch, Dr. Sleaze, Micha Phonem, Magnetfolie, and Ratte Bruns.

Edited, mixed and produced by yours truly at KSV HQ, June 28-30.

101 23:30 to 1:50 (61:05)

201 2:10 to 5:25 (67:53)

Edition of 10.

KSV 032 is € 8.49 within the EU, €10 outside the EU.

KSV 033 (a double disc album) is
€ 10.49 within the EU, €12 outside the EU.

Postage paid. Add € 1 for each additional album.

Send orders to: tlasila [at] gmail [dot] com.

Our sole distribution partner is Tochnit Aleph. Daniel is a brilliant fellow. Support him.

Coming soon, new releases from Rope Cosmetology, Katja Fregatte, TLASILA, and the Was du nicht wissen wolltest and Twenty Years of Sudden Infant compilations.

We're off to Hamburg tomorrow.
